As some of you may know, I have been cleaning up the old city jail. I love history! If you are facing the old Inola city jail, on the top, right hand side, on the roof, is a etching written in concrete. It say's, C.W. Critchton April 4 1925. Old Inola News articles report that the jail was to be built ( From The Inola News September 9, 1921 )after tearing down the abandoned old brick church, also known as the United Methodist North. The foundation rock from the old church was used to build the jail, on the same sight as the old church.
Inola had two United Methodist churches at the time, United Methodist North & United Methodist South. There apparently was some anomosity still over The Civil War, ( Yes I know that means 60 Years Later, Not unheard of ) Hence a southern sempathetic church and a northern sempathetic church. The jail was mostly used, as the article states to " shut up plain drunks." Today, I found another etching in the concrete walk, It say's, Dec 1976 BEN. If anyone out there has any information, or can help me with some research it would be greatly appreciated. Faron
